General Information

Koh Phangan is an island paradise in the Gulf of Thailand located about 100 km from the coast of Southern Thailand Surat Thani Province and about 15 km from the famous resort island of Koh Samui

Koh Phangan is the largest of Samui's neighboring islands with an area of 168 square km. Over 70% of its total area is mountains and tropical forest the lowlands is mountains and coconut fields.

About 8,000 people live on Koh Phangan. Some are Chinese, whose ancestors migrated from China more than hundred years ago and the main population lives in Thong Sala Town. More than 95% of the population are Buddhist but there are a few Muslims in Ban Tai Village. Standard Thai is used as the official language but the southern dialect is more widely spoken among the local people. English is understood in business circles and tourist areas.

Koh Phangan is a district (Amphoe) of the Surat Thani Province in the Southern Region of Thailand. The Most important produce of Koh Phangan is coconuts. Each month Koh Samui and Koh Phangan produce more than 1 million coconut exports to Bangkok. Others prominent island product is fishing and of course there is the growing tourism business.

Koh Phangan is famous for it's monthly full moon parties which attracts thousands of people dancing through the night.

Although Koh Phangan is indeed a very safe place there are few important pointers to bear in mind when visitings.

Drugs

There is a zero tolerance policy with regards to drugs from the authorities. Huge fines or even worse long time imprisonment awaits the unfortunate. We urge you to simply stay away from drugs.

Motorbikes & Driving

You guessed it: most accidents on motorbikes stem from intoxicated parties hopping on a moped and crashing shortly afterwards. Having said that, some roads are less than ideal so we urge you to keep in mind to go very slow, use low gear when going uphill and to remember that driving is on the left. Be careful getting off the bike as not to burn yourself on the exhaust.

Trekking & Rock Climbing

Koh Phangan is a big island and we do not recommend you to go trekking or rock climbing without a guide. It gets dark quickly and you wouldn't want to get caught far into the mountainside not knowing where you are or how to get down.

Theft

There is relatively little problems with theft on the island, but should it happen simple venture down to the police station near Thong Sala to get a report written so your insurance will cover it. Keep a few easy steps in mind: always leave your valuables in the room safe (if possible) or with the resort's reception. Close windows and doors properly and don't tempt anyone. Should you get unlucky, then please keep in mind that the most likely suspect is another traveler.

The Climate and Weather

The climate in Thailand is extremely tropical, i.e. warm and humid. The climate changes are designed by monsoons that create three different seasons in Northern and Central Thailand and two different seasons in Southern Thailand. The southwest monsoon (approx. May to October) is rainy, warm and cloudy, whereas the northeast monsoon (approx November to March) is dry and relatively cool. The hottest months are April and May.

The period from November to February is considered as the best time for visiting Thailand in general and Koh Phangan in particular.

Historical weather in Koh Phangan

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Prevalent Temperature, C° 26.5 27.3 28.9 29.0 28.6 28.2 28.1 28.0 27.8 27.7 26.4 25.5
Average Rainfall, mm 40 10 10 60 190 110 140 120 210 260 300 100

Tip 1: Many people assume that the weather in Koh Phangan is always nice, and little rain makes it even more pleasant. Consider this fact while planning your trip to Phangan, since accommodation is much cheaper during the low season.

Tip 2: The seasons in Koh Phangan and neighboring islands are not the same as in the Southwest islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi),

Local Customs

To truly appreciate Thailand and get along with it's fantastic people, please keep a few pointers in mind with regards to local customs and to avoid offending your hosts.

  1. The Thai people are very respectful of their royal family and you should never refer to the King or them in a negative fashion.
  2. Apart from certain areas, Thai women in general are much more conservative than their Western counterparts. Do not touch them or disrespect them.
  3. The head is considered the most important part of the body, where the spirit resides. Never touch a Thai persons head, especially the older generation. And never step over someones head or point your feet (which is the lowest part of the body) at someone.
  4. Always take your shoes off before entering a Thai home, Temple or even many businesses (generally the latter will have sign stating this).
  5. Nudism or even topless bathing is frowned upon by most Thais. So is venturing out in public (i.e. off th e beach) in bikinis or nothing but bathing gear. Cover yourself up when leaving the beach.

Hospitals & Medical Care

Should you have an accident or get sick then Koh Phangan hospital near Thongsala enjoys a good standard of care. It is worth noting, however, that sister island Koh Samui has a much higher level of care and it is likely that if you are seriously ill or your accident warrants it, that you will be transferred there. The doctors and medical staff at Koh Phangan hospital are able to arrange quick and efficient transfers to Samui should the need be there.

If it is not serious there are also a number of clinics and carecenters around the island with the best one being The Bandon Clinic in Haad Rin.
